My work considers fabric as architectural form, creating spaces and textures with cloth that can be worn on the body, or can dress the home. Light and layering play integral roles to both, harnessing fabric’s compelling contradictions as a provider of structure and delicacy,&#38;nbsp;of weight and softness.

Hinterlands tells two concurrent stories of provenance: a life lived behind&#38;nbsp;behind&#38;nbsp;the coastline of North Edinburgh, and a journey of materials.&#38;nbsp;Taking a tactile line for a wander, fabrics&#38;nbsp;are&#38;nbsp;softly transformed&#38;nbsp;from one state to another, creating&#38;nbsp;textile&#38;nbsp;works gently suspended in space. Born in West Cromwell Street, Leith, she died only 6km away, at Lauriston Farm Road. A coil-winder’s daughter, Nessie left behind a westwards-weaving, coastal trail of addresses: a christening on Constitution St, teenage years by the Water of Leith, a wedding in Pilton, a daughter in Wester Drylaw and a final footprint in Silverknowes.

Retracing Nessie’s steps took me to places ossified in history, and to those utterly transformed since she knew them. Through a series of photographs, traced into abstracted drawings, I have layered her history with my present, creating soft monuments to our ever-changing urban fabric.

I was keen to expose the often unseen, outer edges of the design journey as much as exhibit its final destination.&#38;nbsp;

I travelled to various Scottish mills to source remnant material from their production processes and combined them with fabric remnants from my own past projects, often created years apart. In mingled compositions of aerial views and building elevations, they are stitched in dialogue together to create interior fabric facades.

‘The Unconformities’


Earth Matters marks 300 years since the birth of James Hutton, the Edinburgh-born farmer and writer who revolutionised our understanding of Earth’s creation and the ground beneath us. 


These suspended drawings in space each interpret John Clerk of Eldin’s illustrations for Hutton’s ‘Theory of the Earth’. The drawings were lost for nearly 200 years before their discovery in 1968, and remarkably were included in the exhibition just behind these pieces.


The textiles’ transparency recalls not only the folio pages of Eldin’s drawings, but also layers of geology and time. The shadows the pieces cast move around the room with the rhythm of the passing days and seasons. These works are not static, but rather actively change with time.

The textiles included in these works, cotton organdie and silk organza, have been hand-painted with European earth pigments, in various combinations and levels of dilution. They were created outside and hung on a line to dry, resulting in an organic ‘weathered’ feel to the fabrics. Wet days scattered and soaked the pigment into the cloth, whereas sunny days dried the pigments rapidly, freezing moving rivers of colour as they descended down to earth.

Taking a tactile line for a wander across their surface, this trio of cushions, Loop, Coil and Collage, are crafted from manufacture by-product material from Scottish mills. The cashmere selvedges usually discarded in industrial production processes are salvaged, snipped and stitched into new, seductively soft forms.

Recalling the layered urban landscape of Edinburgh, this soft fabric facade is created from intersecting panels of silk and cotton organdie. As light travels through the piece, its complex composition comes to life, offering a subtle shade that shifts with the seasons.

In 2025 I was thrilled to develop a collection of cushions in collaboration with Scottish contemporary craft gallery, Bard. Using a range of byproduct material from the textile industry, I developed a variety of textures that softly explore different rocky motifs.

These cushions have been created using selvedge from a Scottish cashmere mill, turning a by-product from their manufacturing into seductively stroke-able cushions. The cashmere strips are stitched into a black wool base and interspersed with gold tabs. The effect is like sedimentary rock with glints of gold embedded within.

Using a combination of wool and cashmere offcuts, these cushions have been assembled from series of designs based on abstract drawings of Edinburgh’s architectural panoply. The geometric material appliqués result in a collection of elegant and graphic cushions, with a pleasing textural playfulness.

These cushions have been made by salvaging loom tape, preserving the messy edge left by industrial weaving. It is typically trimmed off before the cloth is rolled and sold to the garment industry. These long, messy centipedes have been sewed to a wool back cloth before boiling them to re-introduce structure to the fibres. The resulting textile becomes something closer to felt, recalling the material’s sheepy origins.

These freeform, hand-painted cushions, softly depict stacking and standing stones, on wool or linen-cotton blend bases. Originally painted as large landscape textiles, they’ve then been divided the painting into series of square and rectangular cushions, each bearing her brush marks as an abstract echo of the full composition they once belonged to.

 The Grit and The Glamour
 Bard, Scotland, November 2023

This is a textile work in two parts: the first consists of three layered silk hangings derived from the layered buildings and histories of Edinburgh; the second is hand-painted wool silk inspired by the stone crags and volcanic rocks, which are as much a part of the city as the built landscape. Like the work, there are layers of resonance with my own experience, both in relation to place and my relationship with textiles. I moved to Edinburgh to study here and then left and have only recently returned to live here again. The organza layers of textile are reminiscent of some of my early work, so there’s an aspect of layered time at play here too.

I was commissioned by Tate Modern to work collaboratively with the artist to source, develop and manufacture the materials used in two very large scale Quipu sculptures in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern.
 
The emphasis was on sustainably conscious material choices, and sourcing suppliers across the UK. This process was conducted remotely, with Cecilia splitting her time between New York and Chile.

More than 50 different materials were sourced, including plant fibres, animal fibres, woven and felted cloth and various forms of recycled and pulped paper and card. These were then manipulated and combined in countless techniques, many dipped into a variety of substrates such as clay, bio-resin and lime paint. Ultimately, the material ‘precarios’ we created were hung alongside mudlarked items from the Thames, gathered by local volunteers.

Once techniques and combinations had been established, the production took place at The Whitewall, Erith during July-August 2022. A large team was involved with this stage, encompassing a team of makers with sculpture, textiles and even jewellery backgrounds.

The 4-week installation took place at the Turbine Hall, September 2022, with many items being made on-site before being hung. Cecilia&#38;nbsp;Vicuña worked in-person collaboratively with the team for this process, improvising the composition of the Quipu from the ground.

The 2024 edition of the State of Fashion Biennale, Ties that Bind, was held in Arnhem between May 17th and June 30th 2024, &#38;nbsp;and curated by Rachel Dedman &#38;amp; Louise Bennetts. 
This edition of the Biennale brought together creative practices in fashion, textiles and contemporary art from across the Global South. Ties that Bind critically examines notions of tradition, explores the political power of clothing, and spotlights alternative approaches to dominant fashion systems, through the work of artists and designers from all over the world. 
At the heart of this edition of the Biennale is a decentralised structure. Ties that Bind has unfolded across four places: the home site in Arnhem, and three sister sites in Nairobi (Kenya), Bengaluru (India) and São Paulo (Brazil). In each place, an interlocutor-curator – Sunny Dolat, Kallol Datta and Hanayrá Negreiros – was invited to develop a project that responded to the Biennale’s themes from their perspective, embedded in their local context and community.
In Arnhem, Ties that Bind celebrates fashion in an expanded field, through critical creative practices from over 20 countries. Artists and designers hail from regions including South America, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and South and East Asia. 
The exhibition includes over 100 works spanning fashion, textiles, contemporary art, film, photography, and sculpture. Across four core themes, it asks: How are artists from the Global South addressing and contesting the colonial legacies embedded in clothing and cloth? How are designers evolving inherited traditions, and engaging with the urgencies of our time?

Dismantling Tradition&#38;nbsp;
 In this first theme, designers from across the Global South revel in the rich textile traditions they inherit, from weaving to quilting, paper-cutting to embroidery. Many address the colonial violence that marginalised historic practices, challenging reductive stereotypes about local identity, and evolving these legacies for new generations.

Political Bodies Works here address the relationship between clothing and the political. Historically, the textile trade was entwined with colonial exploitation, but clothing has also long been a tool of resistance. Artists and designers the world over engage today with the potential and power of fabric and fashion: to challenge stereotypes around identity, origin and gender, to reflect upon migrant experience, to address the legacies of conflict, and to speculate on the future.

Designing Integrity 
This space highlights practices that are critically questioning exploitative global fashion systems and their impacts on the Global South. Combining creativity and innovation, designers across the world are pioneering novel solutions for waste textiles, supporting artisan makers, and prioritising transparency in complex supply chains.

The Fabric of ShelterCloth acts as the foundation for our social and material lives. Clothes are the changeable, ephemeral homes through which we navigate the world, and the works in this section of the exhibition reflect upon this idea: of textiles as refuge, as architecture, as home. These poetic pieces harness the familiar intimacy of fabric. 

Across the local and global network of sites that collectively form this Biennale, the intention is to amplify the kinships and connectedness among artists and designers’ practices from all over the world, and to share the powerful human stories woven into what we wear.
